Nooks and Computers

The process for searching, borrowing and downloading ebooks is the same for Nooks with black and white (B/W) screens and for reading on a computer. B/W Nook users will take the additional step of plugging their device into the computer and transferring titles to it.

NOTE: Kindle users should follow the instructions in the Kindle handout.
NOTE: Tablet users should follow the instructions in the OverDrive or Libby App handout.

What you will need to download the Library’s OverDrive eBooks

  • Valid Fairfax County library card
  • Adobe Digital Editions installed on your computer:
  • An Adobe ID, which can be obtained when you first open Adobe Digital Editions

Search, Borrow and Place Holds

  1. On a computer, go to Fairfax County Public Library’s digital media catalog
  2. Select Sign In located in the upper right corner, and enter your library card number and password.
  3. Search for a title or author or browse Subjects or Collections. Use Advanced Search for more options, or use the Filters to limit by availability or EPUB or PDF eBooks.
  4. Select Borrow if the title is available.
  5. Select Place a Hold if all of the digital copies are checked out. Enter your library card number and password if prompted. After receiving notification that a hold is available, choose one of the following:

1) Borrow the title within three days.
2) Select Deliver Later to stay at the front of the holds list while passing the book to the next person in line. After your chosen suspension period, you will be able to borrow the next available copy.
3) Cancel your hold.

If no action is taken within three days, your hold will be automatically suspended one time for seven days. If no action is taken a second time, the hold will be canceled automatically.

Downloading an eBook

  1. Select the book icon in the upper right to see your Loans.
  2. Choose your format by selecting Download EPUB eBook or Download PDF eBook.
  3. Select Confirm if you have already downloaded Adobe Digital Editions.
  4. Select Open to download the eBook to Adobe Digital Editions.
  5. If this is the first time using Adobe Digital Editions, you will authorize your computer using your Adobe Digital ID. Enter your Adobe ID or select Create an Adobe ID if you do not have one.
  6. The title will open to the book's cover.
  7. Plug your eReader into your computer using a USB cable.  Your eReader will appear in the left column under Devices.
  8. In the Library View within Adobe Digital Editions, click the cover of the book you want to transfer and drag it to your eReader in the left corner.

From the Library View within Adobe Digital Editions, right click on the cover of the book you wish to return and select Return Borrowed Item. If a title has not yet been downloaded, it may be returned from the Loans page of the OverDrive catalog.

The option to renew a title becomes available three days before the title is set to expire and appears under the title in your Loans. You can only use the renew feature once per title. If other users are waiting you can Request the title which places you into the waiting list.

Read eBooks in your Browser

You may choose to read titles in your computer’s browser using the OverDrive Read format. The Overdrive Read format opens a title in your browser which may be read on or offline until the browser is closed. You may open a title using the Overdrive Read option as many times as you wish.

Newer Nook tablet users can download the Libby app to access EPUB eBooks and MP3 eAudiobooks. Please refer to the Libby app handout for detailed instructions.
