I love a quirky and complex book with strong characterization, imaginative world building and an interesting plot. Although I read books in all kinds of categories, my favorite topics are international fiction, mysteries, science fiction and historical fiction. I avoid literary prize winners, or any book described on the back cover as “lyrical,” like the plague. I particularly love a book that blends more than one category: Iain Pears Stone's Fall is both historical fiction and a mystery; Susanna Clarke's Jonathan Norrell and Mr. Strange combines alternative history with science fiction.
In mysteries, I prefer books that are more complex than cozy, but not too violent or grim. Some favorites are Tana French, Peter Robinson, and Sara Paretsky. In Science Fiction my favorites are Lois McMasters Bujold, Connie Willis and Sharon Lee/Steve Miller.
Lately I have fallen in love with audiobooks. I especially love listening to a book while doing a jigsaw puzzle. If you have ever tried audiobooks, but found it difficult to maintain focus — try again, while doing a puzzle. And check out RB Digital and Overdrive — you will be surprised to find how many audiobooks are always available.
