In his NY Times critic's pick for the movie "Gattaca," A. O. Scott said, "the best science fiction...is extrapolated from contemporary anxieties and hopes." That pretty much sums up why I read. Good stories possess an imprint of their times, and I enjoy reading all the imaginative ways that authors weave their concerns into writing.
My favorite genres are fantasy, sci-fi, and fiction. I especially like stories that take place on the fringe of society, with characters that are often impoverished, outsiders, runaways, or deviants. As through a slanted looking glass, these stories show the world from a different perspective. Plus, they make for lively book discussions.
I also read for sheer enjoyment. Whether it's Napoleonic frigates broadsiding each other across the open seas, or a chance romantic encounter between lonely urbanites, a good yarn is hard to put down. Many of my selections aren't "high literature" but they're worthy of reading nonetheless.
