During tax season (January to April), certain branches host free tax assistance events where IRS-certified volunteers help taxpayers prepare and file their income tax returns.
AARP Foundation Tax-Aide Program
Free help in preparing and filing state and federal income tax returns. Offered in cooperation with the IRS, the Tax-Aide Program provides free tax assistance services for low- and middle-income taxpayers, with special attention given to those 50 and over.
NOTE: AARP Foundation Tax-Aide Program services are generally available from late January/early February through April 15 of each year. Check here for local-area locations, dates and times.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program
VITA offers free income tax preparation and filing services to families and individuals who earn less than a particular income ($55,000 in 2018). IRS-certified volunteers will ensure you receive the maximum tax refund and help determine if you are eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). Organized by Fairfax County Department of Family Services.
Prefer to file your own taxes?
Two VITA sites also include a Facilitated Self Assistance (FSA) option. Trained and certified volunteers will be on-site to answer questions or assist as needed.
