Who can apply to COHS?

Any Fairfax County resident who is at least 20 years old. This individual should have:

  • Successfully completed 8th grade.
  • A full service library card in good standing or be willing to apply for a library card.
  • Access to a computer and the internet.

Minors should pursue their high school education through existing high school programs.

Will COHS students receive their GED?

No. This is not a GED (General Educational Development) program. Successful graduates will earn a high school diploma and workforce readiness certificate through an accredited high school.

What is the difference between a GED and high school diploma?

While both the GED and the high school diploma are important, there are several differences between them. Some colleges, institutions and organizations require a high school diploma and may not accept the GED. In addition to providing a high school diploma, COHS gives students the benefit of earning a career certificate to show employers that they have special skills and training for the job.

What type of career certificates will be offered?

Through COHS, students may earn a certificate in the following areas:

  • General Career Preparation
  • Childcare and Education
  • Certified Protection Officer (Security Officer)
  • Office Management
  • Commercial Driving
  • Homeland Security
  • Retail Customer Service
  • Hospitality and Leisure
  • Home Care Professional

When can students work on their courses?

COHS is 100% online. Courses are self-paced and taught in an online learning environment, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Textbooks are not required.

How much time will students need to dedicate to coursework?

Students should dedicate 8-10 hours per week to their coursework. Students enrolled in COHS are assigned an academic coach who will keep them on track. Students will also be provided with a pace guide that will help them move through the program, by completing one credit every two weeks.

How much does COHS cost?

COHS is offered at no charge to students. The library will award scholarships to a limited number of adults.

Is COHS offered in other languages?

Due to its accreditation as a high school, COHS is only offered in English.
