Extra Yarn by Mac Barnett is a story of a girl who found a yarn ball, which was sort of magical as it never ran out of yarn. The girl made sweaters, hats, and coats for everyone in her community. She knitted items for everything, even for things that did not need it. Before long, the whole community looked so lively and colorful, and everyone felt good about themselves and the community.
It was priceless to see the difference in what her work had done to the community. People from all over the world heard about her yarn work. An archduke offered to buy the yarn, and she declined his offer. Then in the deep darkness of the night, someone stole the yarn. The town then became dark and gloomy. Miraculously, the yarn came back and the whole town rejoiced.
I thought it was a great story; it inspires one to color the world around them. It kind of made me think that, in our own eyes, we all do have some extra yarn: Maybe someone has extra basil from their garden to Italianized someone else's pasta dish. My favorite part is where Jon Klassen (illustrator) did a great job illustrating Mr. Norman stunned face when the girl made sweaters for everyone in her class.
