LibGuide Editor's Guide

Hiding Content (from Public View)

If you need to change the visibility of your content, you can:

  1. Hide or show an entire page from public view (use the Page dropdown), or
  2. Put a single content box into or out of draft mode (use the Pencil icon in the header).
  3. Unpublish or publish an entire LibGuide, (but please don't!)

3 OPTIONS THAT AFFECT VISIBILITY. PLEASE AVOID OPTION 3.

Sharing / Publishing Guides

While Unpublished, a LibGuide can only be viewed by those with a LibGuides account.

While Private, a LibGuide can be viewed by anyone with the link.

  • This is useful for sharing Draft LibGuides for Review with management or subject matter experts.
  • This should only be used for limited time during the review process. For questions, check with a site administrator.

Note: this guide you are currently reading is Private. There are a small number of Private LibGuides meant for staff. Should the public guess the URL/web address then they can view this content.

Using Draft Mode - Content Boxes

You can put content boxes, pages and entire guides in "draft mode" that will only be visible to editors logged in! Useful if you're working on something but you don't want the public to see it yet.

For Content Boxes:

(1) Click on the pencil at the top of the box by the box title, usually in the blue header.

(2) Check the box for draft mode!

Please note: Boxes in draft mode will have an eye with a slash through it next to the box title in editing mode (see below for example) and will not be visible at all to the public.

Using Draft Mode - Pages

Putting a page in Draft Mode slightly differs from the above steps for a content box.

In the blue bar next to the page URL, click on the word "Page" next to the small gear icons to bring down the menu of Page Options.

In the second part of the list, you'll see options for visibility, where you can either have the page show on the public guide or not show. Pages that have "do not show" selected will be italicized in the side navigation and will have an eye with a slash through them next to the page name. They will also have a note at the very top of the page in a light blue box starting "Hidden Page..." and giving the option to make the page visible to the public.
