To be honest, mystery is not my cup of tea. But I enjoyed this because I am from the Philippines, similar to the author's background. I find comfort in hearing about Filipino food, and adobo is our national dish. Pandesal is out staple bread, and we must have some bread first thing in the morning with coffee. Back home, we literally walk and line up at the corner bakery for some bread before the rooster crows.
But before I get super sidetracked, the story starts with the family-owned restaurant. The protagonist's ex-boyfriend, who was also a food critic, came to dine with his stepdad. As they were served various Filipino dishes, from appetizer, adobo to dessert, ex-boyfriend, Derek, collapsed and died. The restaurant was closed indefinitely while the police determined what cause Derek's death and Lila, the protagonist, was one of the suspects.
While waiting for the lab results during the medical examination of the food he ate, Lila was actively looking for what and who caused his death. It was a whirlwind of chasing down clues and figuring thins out while showcasing familiar Filipino culture (and noise) in the background.
