Still Sal by Kevin Henkes

When Sal began first grade, things were not happening as planned. First her best friend Griff was assigned to another class, then her parents decided that she would share room with her younger sister Poppy, and her new teacher, Ms. McCormick, would not allow school supplies from home. She didn't feel like herself anymore because of the changes.

She tried so hard to fix it by trying to earn the attention of Ms. Flowers, the teacher next door where her best friend was. She was hoping that she could transfer there. She copied Ms. Flowers' hair and outfit, and started using a rope for a belt, just as Ms. Flowers used a tape measure for her belt.

Ms. Flowers was too busy to notice. Sal, upset that none of her plans were working, ended up sulking in her classroom. Eventually, Ms. McCormick talked and worked with her, and Sal realized that her teacher wasn't bad after all. At the end of the first week of school, even though things changed around Sa, she was still herself.
