This story transpired around Takako's uncle's bookstore in Japan (one of the many neighborhood bookshops in Jimbochu Tokyo).
Depressed and heartbroken, Takako had quit her job so as to avoid the person who she thought loved her. Takako's uncle, Satoru, invited her to live with him on top of the bookstore rent free while she was recovering from her heartbreak. Uncle Satoru's wife, Momoko, had left him five years ago, so he knew what it was like to be heartbroken. He gave Takako space in the beginning to adjust to her reality but, little by little, urged her to get back to life and socialize with others in the nearby coffee shop.
The first night that she had coffee at the coffee shop, she could not sleep, and since there was nothing else to do, she started reading one of the books stacked up on her room. Needless to say, that was the start of her love of reading.
This book was short and sweet. It gave me a small glimpse of Japanese culture, and covered the universal language of love and relationships. The connection between Takako and her Uncle Satoru helped them both to bury the past and face what was up ahead.
