The Humble Pie by Jory John, Illustrated by Pete Oswald

Now that it's November, I will be thinking of different kinds of pie--apple pie, peach pie, pumpkin and sweet potato pie. It just makes sense for me to draw my attention to a picture book titled The Humble Pie.

Humble pie is a low-key, stay-away-from-the-spotlight pie. His best friend was Cake, who is great at everything--literally everything. When both friends teamed up on a science school project, Humble pie ended up doing most of the work because Cake was super busy with his social, sports and other curricular activities. Humble Pie was getting frazzled at the prospect of not finishing on time.

Humble Pie tried not to confront cake about it, but he needed to let Cake know for the sake of the next day's due date. It was a relief that he did tell Cake and Cake stepped up to complete their project.

Ultimately, Humble pie realized that being humble includes being able to speak up for himself and to make sure that they are being treated fairly.
