June is Pride Month, an annual celebration of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) pride. Pride Month coincides with the Stonewall Uprising in New York City, which began in June 1969 and was an important moment in shaping LGBTQ+ social movements in the United States over the next 56 years. Pride Month is celebrated through marches, parades, performances, and other activities to bring awareness to the important contributions of LGBTQ+ rights activists and their efforts to stop bullying, discrimination and violence toward their community.
