Fox 8 is a dreamer. He thinks outside the box; he would go far beyond his comfort zone to find out what's out there. He is not the usual fox, as he taught himself to speak human by observing their speech patterns by looking through people's windows, and he taught himself to read by peeking into their books.
His fellow foxes were dying, and he wanted to find out if there could be another place to go, because the forest where they were presently dwelling was bare, and there was nothing left to eat. So, he ventured to the mall, together with Fox 7, to get food, but the humans saw them differently, and caught Fox 7 and hit him until he was dead. Fox 8 escaped.
Fox 8 was devastated about what happened. It was not an easy trip as he carried the memory of his lost friend and how he died. He travelled far, face down, until he reached a green and dark forest. He met foxes that were healthier than he was. They accepted him, and his health was restored. He wanted to go back to tell the foxes he left behind about the bountiful and beautiful place that he found.
This is just another short story of fellow creatures passing through, looking for a means to survive. George Saunder's allegory really gives you greater understanding of how we survive and how we treat one another.
