Part The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and part Gene Wilder's Willy Wonka, this book grabbed me from the very beginning.
Lucy is a now 26-year-old former child of neglectful parents who works at an Elementary School. The highlight of her days are her interactions with a young boy she hopes to one day adopt named Christopher. One of the ways they bonded was through Lucy's favorite childhood books, which are set on a mysterious island near Maine called Clock Island. The Clock Island books feature child protagonists facing seemingly impossible situations and always coming out on top. Unfortunately, there haven't been any new Clock Island books in years, and their equally mysterious author has disappeared.
When Clock Island books author Jack Masterson's long dormant social media accounts mention a riddle contest for the latest and possibly last ever Clock Island book Lucy is positive she will never have a chance to win. Until she hears the riddle and realizes she knows the answer. Then she and three other competitors are whisked away to the mysterious Clock Island to not only meet the famous author, but to compete in a series of challenges to win the grand prize. It turns out that the other challengers have their own reasons for needing a magical, impossible wish to be granted and to get their hands on the last ever Clock Island manuscript. And they all have their own secrets and histories with Clock Island and the books set there. But when Lucy's wish of having a real family with Christopher gets closer and closer to fruition, she has to see just how far she's willing to go to make that happen.
