The Quiet Place by Sarah Stewart, Pictures by David Small

This story begins and ends with letters sent by Isabel to her Aunt Lupita when Isabel and her family moved to America from Mexico. Isabel wrote about her first snow angel, thanking her aunt about the English words that she taught her, her first day of school, and the day her dad brought home a big refrigerator box, which she could decorate to make a quiet place for herself, where she could write letters, read, and think.

Well, I like the idea of having a quiet place and the process of thinking things through in such a cozy and well-decorated place. The decorated refrigerator box represented Isabel's happiness and hope even as she learn about her new world  as she faced so many new and unpredictable things.  The box made me feel like she is going to be ok.
