Maggie Dawes got pregnant at 16 and temporarily stayed with her Aunt Linda until the baby was born in Ocracoke, North Carolina. The plan was to give birth and give up the baby for adoption. She homeschooled to keep up with her classmates at home (Seattle, Washington) but when she got behind with her studies, her aunt advised her to hire a tutor.
Bryce Trickett tutored her to keep her grades up and taught her about photography. He is two years older than Maggie, also homeschooling, and is about to go to West Point for college. Needless to say, during tutorials and photography lessons, they fell in love. Bryce was ready to marry her (even though he was not the father of the baby she was carrying), but Maggie was not ready; she wanted to be somebody worthy of his love. And she also did not want him to give up his dreams of going to West Point. So, they promised each other to meet when Maggie turns 24 at the beach where they had their first date. They wished that they would meet and live happily ever after, but the story had other turns and ways to get there. Either way the story turned, I could easily see that no one ever really left Ocracoke, North Carolina.
To be honest, I knew that reading a Nicholas Sparks book would make you cry, as this book was recommended to me by a friend. She said that she was bawling in the end. She would ask me every time I saw her if I had finished reading the book; she could not believe that I could pause and put the book down. I think I could put it down because I was seeing a trend in the books written by the author. It seems like he is implying that a happy ending does not really exist, but love can, at some point in your life, and you won't ever lose that.
