Through the Woods is a beautiful graphic novel containing five short, spooky stories. I was given this book as a gift, as I adore ghost stories, especially the short and spooky campfire tale variety that end with a cryptic denouement or jump scare. Through the Woods, much like 2020, is full of both!
This wonderfully sinister little volume contains brilliantly bold illustrations in black and white, and blood red, which is fitting for the creepy tales it contains. A mixture of folklore and the supernatural, each story focuses on real-life terrors: abandonment, domestic violence, family feuds, jealousy, secrets, failed friendships, hunger, the perils of nature, the list goes on. To be such a concise volume, the suspense builds in every story, and the horror in its pages will have give you goosebumps.
I would recommend this title to anyone who is a fan of beautifully illustrated graphic novels, horror, short stories, folklore, and feminism. Winning an Ignatz Award for “Outstanding Artist,” an Eisner Award, and a British Fantasy Award, Through the Woods encompasses art and storytelling at its finest. I would not recommend it for the truly faint of heart (there is a smidge of gory imagery and violence), but you can find it in the Young Adult section at your local library, if you dare…
