I was about to see family on my vacation and wanted to bring a book with me for the trip. I got so excited to see this book and I finished reading it during the flight as this book wraps around the story of a nine-year-old boy Richard, who found a friend when he needed somebody the most. It was at the time when his brother died during the Vietnam War, his mother's depression, his father losing his job, moving to Utah where they could live for free and when his parents were separated.
Once they were settled in the old and abandoned grandmother's house, Richard met and became friends with their elderly neighbor - Mr. Foster. Richard was showered with Mr. Foster's love, kindness, and care. I find that while reading this book that hot chocolate, either way it was made, was the sweetest thing one can have during the coldest of days. Richard likes it when his mother makes it from scratch, and he likes it too when Mr. Foster makes it with the Swiss miss version. I think it was about the spirit of how it was given which pretty much radiates the spirit of the season.
This book was a good company for the ride, bringing good tidings of warmth, joy, and hope that in the end, it's all going to be alright.
