Stella Endicott and the anything-is- possible poem by Kate DiCamillo

by Caroline Tirona, Circulation on 2021-05-21T16:21:59-04:00 | 0 Comments

In this story, second graders Stella and Horace Broom were in Ms. Liliana's class. They were assigned to write a poem, and Stella let Horace read her piece in advance. Horace argued that Stella's poem was not realistic. Horace refused to believe that, based on Stella's poem, there was a pig named Mercy Watson who lived in someone's house, sat on a couch, ate toast and rode in cars. They started to argue so loudly that they were sent to the principals office.

While they were waiting for the principal to see them, Horace started to walk out and escape. Stella followed him until they found themselves stuck inside the janitorial closet. They were locked in for some time. And while talking and being with each other, they began to appreciate each other's point of view and eventually became friends.

I loved Kate DiCamillo's memorable characters, how she introduced big words in treasured teaching moments.  I loved the ending, as it ended surprisingly well even if the story started with an argument.
