Waiting for Christmas is set in New York in 1901. It began with the marriage of Howard and Addy. At their first home, Addy found eight-year-old Jack hiding in the bushes. He escaped the orphanage to look for this three-year-old sister, Polly. They were separated when the police took them from their apartment when their mother passed away. Their dad was working at sea and not due to come home by the end of the year. Jack was worried that their father would not know where they were when he came back.
The story mirrors the spirit of the season in the way that the characters work and wait in hope, joy, peace and love. Love was shown when Howard worked overtime to pay for the extra expense of hiring a carriage to take them to look for Polly at the police station and orphanages. Peace was shown when they opted to pray instead of worry. Joy was shown when they gave away presents and shared a feast with Jack's neighborhood. Hope was given when Addy gave her young housekeeper, Susannah, the courage to apply for a clerk position at the department store.
From looking for Jack's sister to waiting for their father to come back home, this book tells a story of the miracles that can happen at Christmas.
