West With Giraffes starts with a journey in which an old man, Mr. John Riley, and a 17-year-old, Woody Nickel, drive two giraffes to California in the rig. Woody was an orphan who just survived the Dust Bowl in 1938. He felt strongly about getting to California to have a chance at life, and so when he heard that the giraffes were going to California, he asked Mr. Riley to let him drive when the original driver walked out on the job.
It was a twelve-day adventure from New York to San Diego Zoo with people and situations to contend with, as they traveled with two long-necked animals. It was also an adventure to get to know people and giraffes that would long be a part of each other's lives, even when they parted ways once they reached their destination.
