My favorite picture book of the year so far is Simon and the Better Bone, by Corey R. Tabor. Simon is a sweet brown tail-wagging dog who has found the best bone in the world. The book is turned vertically, and on the lower half of the spread, there's a pool reflecting Simon and the world out of the water. Kids can easily understand the bottom half is water, with the pond creatures and things floating on the surface. Simon, however, doesn't understand this. He sees a dog in the water with a better bone!
Yes, antics ensue. Simon has to get the better bone. Kids will delight in knowing better than Simon what's actually going on. Fortunately, despite the looming disaster when Simon makes a move for the bone, the author finds a sweet way to give him a happy ending. This book is sure to become a new story time classic!
