The story took place in the 1960's in Maine when Joe's 4-year- old sister, Ruthie, disappeared while she was eating a sandwich on top of a rock. It is about a family who went through hardship and pain when they could not find her, and years later, their brother Charlie passed away. Somehow grieving and feeling like there would always be something missing as they lived their lives.
And yet there was another family who had a daughter who could not seem to feel that she belonged there as she questions why her color was darker than her parents' and why she could not find any picture of herself when she was a baby.
I find it intriguing of how one's desperate longing could lead to someone else's lifetime grief and loss. It was maddening how one could take someone else's child and get away with it. But it was also inspiring to see how people could catch up and be grateful for what was left. In the end I see family as a place where you find people who love and accept you for who you are -- a place where you can fit back in almost instantly, no matter how long you've been gone.
