- The Fairfax County Public Library System was established by the Board of Supervisors on February 1, 1939.8 The Circuit Court was requested to appoint a Library Board of five trustees for the management and control of the Library System. The Regional System for Fairfax County and City was established on April 7, 1965.

The Library Board's organization conforms to
State laws and regulations. The Library Board's functions and services are consistent with the
standards recommended by the State Library Board.
